Harsh Reality

Gently tell a friend a difficult truth they need to hear, risking the harmony for their benefit.

How to complete Harsh Reality

You tell a friend something true and unwelcome, a blind spot or a bad call they can't see, accepting that it might cost some short-term goodwill. Done well, it's one of the highest-trust things a friendship can hold.

  1. Get clear it's for them, not to vent or be right; if it's the latter, don't
  2. Pick a private, unrushed moment, never in front of others or mid-argument
  3. Ask permission first: 'Can I tell you something hard?' so they're braced, not ambushed
  4. State it once, specifically and kindly, then stop talking and let them respond
  5. Make clear you're staying in their corner regardless of how they take it

Tips

  • Describe the behavior or fact, not a verdict on their character
  • Resist softening it into mush; if they leave unsure what you meant, it didn't land
  • Accept they may need days to come around, or may disagree; you owed honesty, not agreement

What counts as done

You said the difficult thing directly to your friend's face and let them sit with it.
