How to complete Extreme Environment

Stargazing somewhere radically unlike home (a desert, a high alpine pass, a certified dark-sky reserve) reveals a sky most people never see, with thousands of stars and the Milky Way visible to the naked eye. Low light pollution and dry air do the heavy lifting.

1. Pick a Bortle 1-3 spot and verify it against a light-pollution map.
2. Time the trip to a new moon for the darkest possible sky.
3. Check the forecast for clear, low-humidity nights before committing.
4. Let your eyes dark-adapt for 20-30 minutes using only a red flashlight.
5. Use a sky app to locate the Milky Way core, planets, and major constellations.

Tips

• Deserts turn cold at night, so pack far more layers than the daytime heat suggests.
• Download offline maps; remote dark-sky sites usually have no signal.
