Elder Support

Spend intentional time listening to an elderly person's stories and lore for over an hour.

How to complete Elder Support

Older people are walking archives of stories that vanish when no one asks, and an unhurried hour of real listening is genuinely rare for many of them. You give them the dignity of being heard and walk away with history you can't get anywhere else.

  1. Choose someone, a grandparent, neighbor, or relative, and set aside a block with nowhere else to be
  2. Open with a concrete prompt like 'what was your first job' or 'how did you meet'
  3. Let silences sit and follow their tangents instead of steering back to your questions
  4. Ask follow-ups about people, places, and feelings to draw out the fuller story
  5. Stay past the polite point, the best material often surfaces well after the first half hour

Tips

  • Ask permission to record or jot notes; many are flattered someone cares to keep it
  • Bring an old photo or object to unlock memories they'd never think to volunteer
  • Resist comparing or one-upping with your own stories; this hour is theirs

What counts as done

You spent over an hour genuinely listening to an elderly person's stories, doing more listening than talking.
