Dune Climber

Successfully trek to the summit of a significant natural sand dune.

How to complete Dune Climber

Cresting a large sand dune on foot is deceptively hard: for every two steps up, sand slides you back one, so a 100-meter dune can wind you like a real climb. Reaching the top earns you a sweeping ridge view and the strange, silent landscape that only big dune fields offer.

  1. Choose a notable dune field (Sahara ergs, Namib's Dune 45, White Sands, or a tall coastal dune) and check access rules
  2. Go early morning or late afternoon to avoid midday heat and scorching sand
  3. Climb along the dune's windward ridge where the sand is firmer underfoot
  4. Use a steady, planted-step rhythm rather than rushing; pause to let the sand settle under you
  5. Reach the actual crest, then enjoy the easy run or slide back down

Tips

  • Carry far more water than feels necessary; dune climbing dehydrates fast
  • Barefoot can be cooler in soft sand but check temperature first, midday sand burns
  • Climbing the ridge line beats the open face, you sink less

What counts as done

You stood on the summit ridge of a substantial natural dune after climbing it under your own power.
