How to complete Doctorate / PhD

A PhD is earned by producing original research that adds new knowledge to your field and defending it before experts who try to find its weaknesses. It's less a course you finish than a multi-year project culminating in a thesis you must convince a committee to accept.

1. Get admitted to a doctoral program and secure an advisor whose research and working style actually fit you
2. Pass any required coursework and qualifying or comprehensive exams that gate candidacy
3. Define a research question that is genuinely novel and feasible within a few years
4. Do the research and write the thesis, iterating closely with your advisor and committee through drafts
5. Defend the thesis: present your work and answer the committee's challenges in your viva or defense

Tips

• Choose the advisor as carefully as the topic: the relationship makes or breaks completion more than the subject does
• Scope the question narrowly; over-ambitious projects are the most common reason candidates stall for years
• Treat the defense as a discussion among peers, not an interrogation, since by then you know your work better than anyone in the room

What counts as done

Your committee passes your defense and the degree is conferred, granting you the doctoral title.
