Stepping into a festival from a tradition you weren't raised in, and staying long enough to feel slightly out of place, breaks the autopilot of only ever celebrating your own customs. 1. Find a festival genuinely outside your background: a Diwali, Lunar New Year, Holi, Eid, Day of the Dead, or local indigenous celebration near you
2. Read up beforehand on what it commemorates and any etiquette around dress, photos, or sacred spaces
3. Go with someone from that community if you can, or simply arrive open and ready to ask questions politely
4. Try the food, watch the rituals, and participate where outsiders are welcomed
5. Stay past the first awkward stretch so you experience more than the entrance

• When unsure whether to photograph or join in, ask first; most hosts are glad to explain
• Community centers, temples, and cultural associations list public events that tourists often miss
• Skip treating it as a costume or a photo backdrop; observe how locals dress and follow their lead
