Cetacean Encounter
35 pointstravel & exploration
Swim in close proximity to dolphins in their natural habitat or a verified sanctuary.
How to complete Cetacean Encounter
This is about sharing water with wild dolphins on their terms, not a captive swim-with-dolphins pen. The magic is the choice they make to approach, and doing it ethically means you never become the reason a pod changes its behavior.
- Book with operators certified for wild dolphin or whale interaction (look for permits and a no-touch, no-feed policy), or pick a reputable marine sanctuary.
- Go where resident pods are reliable: Kaikoura NZ, the Azores, Bimini, the Red Sea, or spinner dolphin bays in Hawaii.
- Enter the water quietly, float horizontally, and let the dolphins set the distance instead of swimming at them.
- Skip sunscreen that harms marine life and use reef-safe SPF before getting in.
Tips
- Avoid any tour that guarantees touching, feeding, or riding animals, that is a red flag for harassment.
- Morning trips usually have calmer seas and more active pods.
- A snorkel and freedive skills beat a loud motor for getting close naturally.
What counts as done
You were in open water as wild dolphins swam near you, with photos or a logged tour confirming the encounter.
