Capital Challenge
20 pointstravel & exploration
Visit the official capital city of a country.
How to complete Capital Challenge
Setting foot in a nation's official capital means standing where its government, history, and identity concentrate. It's a distinct travel milestone because the capital isn't always the biggest or most touristy city, so it forces you to seek out the real seat of power rather than just the famous spots.
- Confirm the official capital before you go; some countries surprise you (Canberra not Sydney, Ottawa not Toronto, Brasilia not Rio)
- Plan your route so the capital is an actual stop, not just an airport layover
- Visit at least one government landmark such as the parliament, presidential palace, or national assembly
- Spend real time on the ground, walking a central district rather than just passing through
Tips
- Watch for countries with multiple or disputed capitals (South Africa has three) and pick the official seat of government
- A connecting flight through the capital's airport doesn't count, leave the terminal
- Check entry visa rules early since capitals often require advance paperwork
What counts as done
You physically spent time in the city that is the recognized official capital, ideally with a photo at a government or national landmark.
