How to complete Canon Scholar

Reading five canonical works connects you to the references, allusions, and arguments that later literature is built on. The value comes from range, so choose across eras and cultures rather than five books off the same shelf.

1. Pick five with spread: vary the century, country, and form so you're not reading five versions of the same book.
2. Get a well-annotated edition for older or translated works; footnotes save you from missing half the meaning.
3. Set a per-book pace, say 30 pages a day, so a 600-page novel doesn't stall the whole project.
4. Read a one-paragraph context summary first for dense classics; knowing the shape frees you to notice the craft.
5. Jot one or two reactions per book, a marked line or a disagreement, so it actually sticks.

Tips

• A strong audiobook narration carries verse and dialogue-heavy plays better than the page does.
• If a book genuinely isn't working after 50 pages, swap it; suffering through it isn't the goal.
• Translations vary wildly, so check which one scholars recommend before buying.
