How to complete Canine Sledging

Being pulled across snow by a team of huskies is a genuinely different kind of travel: fast, quiet except for the dogs, and dependent on cold conditions you can't fake. It's worth doing both for the ride and for meeting the working dogs that make it possible.

1. Pick a winter destination with reliable snow and reputable kennels (Lapland, Alaska, Canada, Norway, Svalbard)
2. Book a tour where you drive or co-drive a team, not just ride as a passenger, if you want the full experience
3. Dress in serious layers; standing on the runners in wind chill gets cold fast
4. Listen to the musher's brake and command briefing before setting off
5. Spend a few minutes with the dogs before and after; it's part of the point

Tips

• Choose operators that clearly care for their dogs year-round, not just in season
• Bring goggles or sunglasses against blowing snow and glare
• Go on a clear cold day; warm spells turn trails to slush and cancel runs
