Blood Donor

Donate blood for the first time. One donation can save up to three lives.

How to complete Blood Donor

One unit of whole blood gets separated into red cells, plasma, and platelets, which is how a single donation reaches up to three patients. It costs you about an hour, a needle stick, and a few days of slightly reduced gym performance — a rare case where the impact-to-effort ratio is absurdly good.

  1. Check eligibility on your local blood service's website — most require you to be 17 or older, above roughly 50 kg, and feeling well, with waiting periods after some travel, tattoos, or medications.
  2. Book an appointment at a blood bank or mobile drive; walk-ins work at many centers but appointments cut the wait.
  3. The day before and morning of: drink plenty of water and eat proper meals, ideally with some iron (red meat, beans, spinach). Never donate fasted.
  4. Bring photo ID, answer the health questionnaire honestly, and pass the quick hemoglobin finger-prick check.
  5. The draw itself takes about 10 minutes; then sit for 15 minutes with the free snack before leaving.

Tips

  • Tell staff it is your first time — they will keep a closer eye on you and talk you through everything.
  • Being well-hydrated makes your veins easier to find and the whole thing faster.
  • Skip heavy lifting and intense cardio for the rest of the day, and keep the bandage on a few hours.
  • If you feel lightheaded, say so immediately; it is common and staff handle it constantly.
