Academic Listener
15 pointslearning & intelligence
Attend a public lecture or webinar by an expert in your field.
How to complete Academic Listener
Hearing a working expert present in your own field, live, exposes you to ideas before they reach textbooks and lets you ask the question that's actually bugging you. It's the difference between consuming knowledge and joining the conversation around it.
- Find a talk through university event calendars, professional society newsletters, or platforms like Eventbrite and your field's mailing lists
- Pick a speaker whose work you already half-know so the talk builds on something
- Register early for popular webinars; in-person seminars often just need you to show up
- Write down two questions beforehand so you're ready when the floor opens
- Stay for the Q&A and ask one, or message the speaker afterward
Tips
- Department colloquia and journal-club talks are usually free and open to the public even if you're not enrolled
- If a webinar is recorded, attend live anyway so you can participate rather than watching passively later
What counts as done
You attended a lecture or webinar by a recognized expert in your field, start to finish.
