The Sparring Session

Complete your first live sparring session without losing your cool or quitting.

How to complete The Sparring Session

Sparring is the moment training stops being theory: a resisting partner is trying to land on you in real time. The win condition here isn't tapping or scoring points, it's staying composed and finishing the round instead of going home flustered or swinging in a panic. Surviving your first one calmly is the gateway to actually getting good.

  1. Go light on the first round and tell your partner you're a beginner so they dial back power
  2. Keep breathing in a steady rhythm; holding your breath is what triggers the adrenaline dump and panic
  3. Protect yourself first: hands up and chin down for striking, frame and posture for grappling
  4. Treat getting hit or tapped as information, not failure, and keep moving instead of freezing
  5. Make it to the bell without storming off, throwing a tantrum, or asking to stop

Tips

  • Ego is the real opponent; going 50% lets you think instead of flail
  • A mouthguard and the right gloves or rashguard make you far less tentative
  • If you feel rage rising, drop the pace rather than matching their intensity
