First Flow
15 pointsfitness & sports
Attend your first yoga class and survive to savasana.
How to complete First Flow
The first class is the whole barrier with yoga; nobody is flexible when they start, and every regular in the room once fumbled through their first downward dog. Getting through one guided session teaches you the room etiquette and basic shapes that make every future class easy to walk into.
- Search for a class labeled beginner, gentle, hatha, or slow flow at a nearby studio or gym; avoid anything called power, hot, or ashtanga for your first time.
- Book it, then eat only lightly in the two hours before.
- Wear stretchy clothes, arrive ten minutes early, and tell the instructor it is your first class so they can offer modifications.
- Set up your mat mid-room so you can see experienced people on all sides and copy them.
- Follow along at your own pace, drop into child's pose whenever you need a break, and stay through the final resting pose instead of sneaking out.
Tips
- Studios lend or rent mats; do not buy gear for class one.
- Wobbling and skipping poses is normal and nobody is watching you.
- Savasana, the lying-down ending, is part of the class; leaving before it is the one real faux pas.
- If classes feel intimidating, one online beginner video first can serve as a rehearsal, but the achievement is the real class.
What counts as done
