The Iron Core
55 pointsfitness & sports
Hold a perfect plank position for 5 continuous minutes without your hips sagging.
How to complete The Iron Core
A five-minute plank is far more about positional endurance and mental grit than raw core strength, since the hardest part is keeping the hips from sagging as fatigue sets in. Holding a clean line for that long trains the deep stabilizers that protect your lower back. Most people can hold 60 seconds; reaching five minutes is a deliberate progression.
- Set the position: forearms under shoulders, body in one straight line from heels to head, eyes down.
- Brace as if about to take a punch, squeeze glutes, and tuck the pelvis slightly to kill the sag.
- Build with timed holds, adding 20-30 seconds per session and resting fully between sets.
- On the attempt, start a timer out of sight and breathe slowly and steadily throughout.
- When the core fatigues, re-squeeze glutes and quads to share the load and hold the line.
Tips
- Hips drifting up is a cheat; hips dropping strains the back. A mirror or video keeps you honest.
- Don't hold your breath; shallow steady breathing buys you minutes.
- Spread elbows and press forearms down to recruit the lats and steady the shoulders.
What counts as done
You hold a straight, non-sagging forearm plank for 5 continuous minutes verified by a timer.
