The 10K Run

Complete a 10-kilometer run. You have entered the world of endurance athletics.

How to complete The 10K Run

Running 10 kilometers without stopping marks the jump from casual jogger to someone with real aerobic base. It's far enough to demand pacing and patience but short enough to train for in a couple of months from a modest starting point.

  1. Build a base of three short runs a week before adding distance, so your tendons adapt as fast as your lungs
  2. Add one longer run weekly, increasing it by roughly 10 percent each week until it reaches 10K
  3. Run your long efforts slow enough to hold a conversation; speed comes after distance
  4. Pick a flat route or treadmill for the attempt and start slower than feels natural
  5. Sip water beforehand and eat a light carb snack 60-90 minutes prior if running in the morning

Tips

  • Negative-split it: run the back half slightly faster than the front to avoid blowing up early
  • New shin or knee pain means back off a week, not push through
  • Lay out clothes and shoes the night before to kill the excuse to skip

What counts as done

Your watch or phone GPS logs a continuous 10.0 km run, walk breaks allowed only if you set that goal.
