Sub-20 5K
70 pointsfitness & sports
Run 5 kilometers in under 20 minutes. Elite speed.
How to complete Sub-20 5K
Sub-20 means holding roughly 4:00 per kilometer for the whole 5K, a pace most casual runners can't sustain even for one lap. It marks the jump from 'fit recreational runner' to genuinely fast.
- Build an aerobic base first: several months of easy mileage so your engine can support the speed.
- Add weekly interval sessions (400m to 1km reps at goal pace or faster with short recoveries) to teach your legs the rhythm.
- Run one weekly tempo at threshold (comfortably hard, around 4:10-4:20/km) to raise the pace you can sustain.
- Time-trial on a flat, accurate course or a track, holding even 4:00/km splits.
- Taper a few easy days before your attempt so you arrive fresh.
Tips
- Your math is 4:00/km or 1:36 per 400m lap, so memorize the splits and check them early.
- Don't blast the first kilometer; going out at 3:45 then fading costs more than it gains.
- Pick a flat, windless day and a certified or track course, since hills and corners quietly steal seconds.
What counts as done
