Freestanding Handstand

Hold a freestanding handstand (no wall) for at least 10 continuous seconds.

How to complete Freestanding Handstand

Balancing on your hands with no wall for ten seconds is a milestone in body control, not just strength. It demands wrist, shoulder, and core coordination plus the nerve to kick up into the unknown and correct yourself with your fingertips.

  1. Build wrist and shoulder readiness with wrist stretches and wall handstand holds first
  2. Practice kicking up to a wall handstand to learn the inverted position and shoulder stack
  3. Move to freestanding kick-ups in an open space, bailing safely by cartwheeling or stepping out
  4. Learn to balance using finger pressure: push the floor with fingertips when tipping forward
  5. Stack hips and shoulders over hands in a straight line so you're not muscling it

Tips

  • Spread fingers wide and grip the floor; your hands steer like feet do when standing
  • Practice the bail-out cartwheel early so fear of falling stops sabotaging your kick-ups
  • Short daily practice beats long rare sessions; balance is a skill the nervous system learns by reps

What counts as done

You hold a handstand away from any wall or support for at least 10 continuous seconds, ideally caught on video.
