Black Belt / Mastery
95 pointsfitness & sports
Achieve the highest rank or master-tier certification in a combat sport.
How to complete Black Belt / Mastery
This is the top-tier rank in a combat art (a BJJ black belt, a karate or taekwondo dan, a judo black belt), awarded only after years of graded progress. It certifies depth and consistency, not a single test, which is why so few who start ever reach it.
- Choose one discipline and a legitimate school with a recognized instructor or federation lineage.
- Train consistently, typically 2-4 sessions a week, for years; there is no shortcut around mat time.
- Progress through the intermediate belt or kyu/gup gradings as your instructor assesses you.
- Spar and, where expected, compete to pressure-test your technique against resisting opponents.
- Pass the formal black belt examination or grading board for your art.
Tips
- Timelines vary wildly: a BJJ black belt averages around 10 years, a karate shodan often 4-6.
- Steady weekly attendance beats occasional hard pushes; consistency is what actually grades you.
- Respect your body; managing injuries and recovery is part of lasting long enough to be promoted.
- Cross-training helps, but earn the rank within one art's curriculum and lineage.
What counts as done
