The Testament

Write a will or officially set the beneficiaries on your accounts. Endgame paperwork, handled.

How to complete The Testament

Most adults have no will and no named beneficiaries, which means a court and default inheritance rules decide where everything goes. Spending a few hours on this paperwork is one of the highest-leverage favors you can do for the people you love, and the relief afterward is real.

  1. List what you own: bank accounts, investments, retirement accounts, property, insurance policies, and anything sentimental you care about.
  2. Log into each financial account and check whether a beneficiary is named; add or update one where the option exists, since these designations often override a will.
  3. Decide who gets what and who should act as executor, and ask that person if they are willing.
  4. Draft the will using a lawyer, a notary, or a reputable online will service, depending on how complex your estate is and what your country requires.
  5. Sign it with the witnesses your jurisdiction requires, then store the original somewhere findable and tell your executor where it is.

Tips

  • Beneficiary forms on retirement and insurance accounts are the fast win; many take five minutes each and cover most of your money.
  • A will locked in a safe nobody can open might as well not exist; findability matters as much as validity.
  • Revisit it after marriage, divorce, children, or a big asset purchase.
  • If you have minor children, naming a guardian is the single most important clause.

What counts as done

A validly signed will exists in a known location, or every major account has a named, current beneficiary, and your executor knows their role.
