First Cushion
35 pointsfinances & budgeting
Save your first emergency cushion: one month of essential living expenses.
How to complete First Cushion
One month of essential expenses sitting in a separate account changes the texture of bad luck: a dead car battery or a late paycheck becomes an errand instead of a crisis. It is also the prerequisite for every bigger financial move, because you stop borrowing from your own future every time something breaks.
- Add up one month of essentials only: rent, utilities, groceries, transport, insurance, minimum debt payments. Leave out restaurants, subscriptions, and fun money.
- Open a separate high-yield savings account so the cushion never mingles with spending cash.
- Set a deadline three to six months out and divide the target by the number of paychecks between now and then.
- Automate that per-paycheck transfer, then accelerate with windfalls: tax refund, a bonus, proceeds from selling stuff you do not use.
- When the balance hits the target, write down what actually counts as an emergency so you do not quietly raid it.
Tips
- An essentials-only month is smaller than your normal spending, which is the point: hit the reachable number first, extend later.
- Selling one unused item can seed the account on day one and build momentum.
- If you ever draw it down, pause other goals and refill it first.
What counts as done
The dedicated account holds at least one month of your essential expenses, separate from day-to-day money.
