The Sprout Farmer

Grow your own microgreens or sprouts in a jar on your kitchen counter and eat them.

How to complete The Sprout Farmer

Sprouting turns dry seeds into fresh greens on your counter in days, no soil or sunlight required for the early stage. It is the fastest possible home-growing win and gives you living food with a strong nutrient hit for pennies.

  1. Buy seeds sold specifically for sprouting or microgreens (broccoli, radish, alfalfa, mung bean) to avoid chemically treated garden seed.
  2. For jar sprouts, soak a spoonful of seeds overnight, then drain and cover the jar mouth with mesh or cheesecloth.
  3. Rinse and drain thoroughly twice a day, leaving the jar tilted upside-down so no water pools and rots the seeds.
  4. Keep them out of direct sun for the first days; once tails appear, give indirect light to green them up.
  5. Harvest jar sprouts in 3 to 6 days; for microgreens, scatter seed on a tray of soil and snip the stems with scissors once true leaves form.

Tips

  • Good drainage is the whole game, standing water is what causes slimy, smelly failures.
  • Mung and lentil sprout fast and cheap if you want a guaranteed first success.
  • Tiny root hairs look like mold but disappear after a rinse; real mold is fuzzy and stays.

What counts as done

You eat a handful of sprouts or microgreens you grew from dry seed on your own counter.
