The Paper Trail

20 pointschores & home

Sort through the pile of physical mail and documents on your counter. File or shred it all.

How to complete The Paper Trail

The counter pile is usually a mix of a few things that genuinely need action and a lot that just needs to be filed or destroyed. Processing it in one pass clears the surface and stops bills or notices from slipping through.

  1. Bring the whole pile to a table with a shredder or shred bag, a recycling bin, and a file folder within reach
  2. Touch each item once and sort into act-on, file, or shred/recycle; don't restack a maybe pile
  3. Shred anything with account numbers, signatures, or personal details rather than tossing it whole
  4. File the keepers (warranties, tax docs, medical) into labeled folders right away
  5. Put the act-on items somewhere visible with a deadline, then deal with them or schedule a time

Tips

  • Going forward, open mail over the recycling bin so junk never lands on the counter
  • Snap photos of receipts and warranties you only need digitally, then shred the paper
  • Set a recurring 10-minute weekly pass so it never rebuilds into a pile

What counts as done

The counter is clear of paper, sensitive documents are shredded, and the keepers are filed.
