The Mending Kit

10 pointschores & home

Sew a button back on or repair a torn seam instead of retiring the garment.

How to complete The Mending Kit

A lost button or split seam is a five-minute fix that most people treat as a death sentence for the garment. Learning this one repair pays for itself the first time and permanently changes what counts as ruined clothing.

  1. Assemble a minimal kit: hand needles, thread in black, white, and one neutral, small scissors, and spare buttons — most shirts hide one on the inside hem.
  2. Thread the needle with about 50 cm of doubled thread and knot the tail ends together.
  3. For a button: anchor with a small stitch, make six to eight passes through the holes, wind the thread under the button a few times to form a shank, then knot off against the fabric.
  4. For a seam: turn the garment inside out, pin the split closed, and backstitch along the original seam line, overlapping the intact stitching at both ends.
  5. Knot off, trim, and give the repair a firm tug to confirm it holds.

Tips

  • Match thread color or go one shade darker; darker disappears, lighter shows.
  • Backstitch beats running stitch anywhere that takes strain.
  • For tears mid-fabric rather than at a seam, iron-on mending patches are legitimate, not cheating.

What counts as done

The garment is back in your regular rotation and survives a wash without the button or seam letting go.
