How to complete The Key Exchange

Handing over a key is a small object carrying a large signal: you trust this person in your space when you're not there. It usually marks the shift from dating to building a shared life, whether or not you live together. Worth doing when the trust is real, not as a test or a way to patch a shaky patch.

1. Confirm you actually want the access change, not just the symbolism of it.
2. Get a copy cut or set up the smart-lock code ahead of time so the moment isn't an afterthought.
3. Hand it over with a clear word about what it means to you.
4. Agree on basic norms together: a heads-up before dropping by, for instance.

Tips

• Don't give a key to end an argument or prove commitment under pressure.
• If you rent, check whether your lease restricts who can hold keys.
• One-directional access is fine; it doesn't have to be reciprocal to count.
