How to complete The Cold Approach

Walking up to a stranger you find attractive and starting a conversation is the highest-courage, lowest-tech move in dating, and it's become rare enough to be memorable. The achievement is the respectful approach itself, not getting a number, which you can't control.

1. Pick a low-pressure setting where talking is normal (coffee shop, bookstore, gallery, class, or party), not someone mid-commute wearing headphones.
2. Open with something situational and honest: the book they're holding, the event, or simply admitting you wanted to say hi.
3. Talk for a few minutes and read the signals: questions back and sustained eye contact mean continue; short answers mean wrap it up.
4. If it's going well, be direct: say you'd like to see them again and ask for their number.
5. Whatever the answer, exit warmly and quickly.

Tips

• Approach within seconds of deciding to: wait longer and your brain builds a case against it.
• Make leaving easy for them: approach from the front, keep distance, stay relaxed.
• Rehearse only the first sentence; script more and you'll sound scripted.
