The Heavy Mount

30 pointschores & home

Securely mount a heavy object (TV, massive mirror) using the exact correct anchors for your specific wall type (masonry, brick, or drywall studs).

How to complete The Heavy Mount

Mounting something heavy isn't about the bracket. It's about matching the anchor to what's behind the wall, so the load transfers into structure instead of crumbling plaster. Get this right once and you stop fearing that your TV or mirror will fall in the night.

  1. Identify your wall type: knock to find hollow drywall vs solid masonry, or drill a tiny test hole and check the dust (white powder = drywall, red/grey grit = brick or block).
  2. For drywall, run a stud finder and mark the studs; aim to land at least two mount holes into wood, not just board.
  3. For brick, block, or concrete, use a hammer drill, a masonry bit, and sleeve or wedge anchors rated above the object's weight.
  4. Where studs don't line up, use heavy-duty toggle bolts rated for the load, never plastic expansion plugs for anything heavy.
  5. Level the bracket, drill pilot holes at the right diameter for your anchor, then torque fasteners snug without stripping.
  6. Hang the item and apply firm downward and outward pull to confirm zero movement.

Tips

  • Buy anchors rated at least 2x the actual weight to cover dynamic load and your own arm pulling on it.
  • In brick, drill into the brick face, not the softer mortar joints.
  • Check behind the wall for pipes or wiring before drilling: outlets and faucets are clues.

What counts as done

The object is dead solid on the wall, level, and doesn't budge when you tug hard in any direction.
