The Guest Network
20 pointsdigital hygiene
Set up a separate Wi-Fi network for visitors so they don't have access to your main internal drives.
How to complete The Guest Network
A guest network gives visitors internet without putting them on the same LAN as your NAS, printers, smart locks, and shared drives. It also quarantines cheap IoT gadgets that are common break-in points.
- Log into your router's admin page (usually 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1) or its app
- Find the Guest Network or Guest Wi-Fi option and enable it with its own name and password
- Confirm client isolation or 'no access to local network' is switched on so guests can't see your devices
- Hand out only the guest credentials and move smart-home gadgets onto it too
Tips
- Give the guest SSID a distinct name so you never share the main password by mistake
- Enabling AP/client isolation also stops a compromised guest device from reaching the others
- Putting IoT devices on guest limits the blast radius if one is hacked
What counts as done
A device joined to the guest network can browse the web but cannot reach your shared drives or other LAN devices.
