The Embarrassing Archive

Scroll back years on your social media and delete posts that no longer reflect your current maturity.

How to complete The Embarrassing Archive

This is a deliberate pass through your old posts to remove the ones that misrepresent who you are now: cringe jokes, exes, half-formed political takes, photos you'd hate a recruiter to find. The point isn't to erase your past but to make your public record match the person currently behind the account.

  1. Start with your oldest content first, since that is usually the most dated and the hardest to find later
  2. Use platform tools like Facebook's Activity Log or Twitter/X advanced search by date range to jump back years quickly
  3. Apply one test per post: would you be fine with a boss, partner, or stranger seeing this today?
  4. Download a full archive before deleting if you want a private copy of memories
  5. Check tagged photos and old comments too, not just your own posts

Tips

  • Third-party tools like TweetDelete or Redact can bulk-remove thousands of posts when manual scrolling is hopeless
  • Deletion isn't always instant or total, screenshots and reposts may survive, so prioritize the genuinely damaging items
  • Do it in short sessions, an hour at a time, so you don't burn out and quit halfway

What counts as done

Your timeline scrolls back to its origin with nothing left that makes you wince.
