The Budget Blueprint
30 pointsfinances & budgeting
Build a monthly budget using any system (50/30/20, zero-based, envelopes) and actually follow it for one month.
How to complete The Budget Blueprint
A budget is a decision made in advance about where your money goes, instead of wondering afterward where it went. The real achievement is not building the plan but surviving thirty days of reconciling reality against it without quitting.
- Pull the last two or three months of bank and card statements and total what you actually spend per category, building the budget from real numbers, not aspirations.
- Pick one system: 50/30/20 (50% needs, 30% wants, 20% saving and debt payoff) for simplicity, zero-based if you want every dollar assigned, envelopes if you overspend on cards.
- Write the plan down before the month starts: income at the top, a number next to every category.
- Check actual spending against the plan once a week: ten minutes with a calendar reminder.
- When a category blows out mid-month, move money from another category instead of abandoning the whole budget.
Tips
- Your first budget will be wrong; that is data, not failure. Fix the numbers for month two.
- Automate savings on payday so that share leaves before you can spend it.
- Include a small miscellaneous line, because a budget with zero slack breaks on the first surprise.
What counts as done
One full calendar month finished with a written plan and the actual numbers sitting next to it.
