Presentation Matters
5 pointscooking & diet
Plate a home-cooked meal so beautifully that you feel compelled to take a photo of it.
How to complete Presentation Matters
This is the moment a home meal stops looking like fuel and starts looking like something you'd serve a guest. Plating is a skill of restraint and contrast, and learning it changes how you cook even when no one's watching.
- Wipe the plate rim clean and start with a mostly empty plate, leaving breathing room around the food.
- Build a little height instead of spreading everything flat; lean or stack components.
- Add color and contrast: a green herb, a bright sauce, or a sear mark against pale food.
- Finish with one deliberate garnish or a drizzle that signals intention, not clutter.
- Shoot it in natural light from slightly above before it cools or sweats.
Tips
- Odd numbers (three scallops, not four) look more natural.
- A swipe or dot of sauce reads more 'restaurant' than a flooded plate.
- Wipe drips with a damp cloth right before the photo.
