How to complete Paint Touch-Up

A scuff or a patched nail hole stands out far more than the damage warranted if the repair leaves a visible patch. The goal is a touch-up that disappears into the wall, which comes down to matching the exact paint and feathering the edges.

1. Find the original paint can or color code; if it's gone, take a chip to a store for a color match scan
2. Clean the spot and let any spackle on a patched hole dry and sand flush first
3. Use the same sheen as the wall, not just the color, since gloss mismatch shows even when the color is perfect
4. Dab paint on with a small brush or mini foam roller, feathering outward so there's no hard edge
5. Let it dry fully and check in daylight before deciding on a second coat

Tips

• Roll touch-ups if the wall was rolled; a brushed patch leaves a different texture that catches light
• Paint darkens slightly as it dries, so judge the match dry, not wet
• If you can't match it, repaint the whole wall corner to corner; partial blending often fails on faded paint
