How to complete External Backup Lore

A full backup means your photos, messages, app data, and settings exist somewhere other than the phone itself, so a lost, stolen, or bricked device costs you nothing. Most people only realize the gap after the phone is already gone.

1. Pick a method: iPhone via encrypted iCloud or a local Finder/iTunes backup; Android via Google One or your maker's backup tool
2. For the most complete copy, plug into a computer and run an encrypted local backup that includes passwords and health data
3. Verify the backup finished and note its date and size rather than assuming it ran
4. Optionally export irreplaceable photos and videos to a second location like an external drive

Tips

• Tick the encrypt option: unencrypted backups skip saved passwords, Wi-Fi, and health data
• Cloud-only isn't a real backup if you're at your storage limit; check it isn't silently failing
• Test restore-readiness by browsing the backup, not just trusting the success message
