A second pet can give your first real company during the hours you're away, but a clumsy introduction can stress both animals for months. The goal is two animals that genuinely coexist, not one resident bullied in its own home. Matching temperament and energy matters more than picking the cutest face.

1. Match the newcomer to your current pet's age and energy: a hyper puppy can overwhelm a senior dog
2. Set up separate food bowls, beds, and litter or crate space before the new one arrives
3. Introduce on neutral ground or through a barrier first, then supervise short sessions before full contact
4. Give each animal its own one-on-one attention so the resident pet doesn't feel displaced
5. Watch for sustained tension over weeks and adjust pace; rushing creates lasting rivalry
