Desktop Zen

Clear your computer's desktop of all random files, screenshots, and folders. Return to a clean wallpaper.

How to complete Desktop Zen

A desktop buried in screenshots and 'Untitled folder 3' is friction every time you boot up, and the thumbnail rendering can even slow older machines. Getting back to bare wallpaper makes the screen feel like a fresh tool again.

  1. Make one folder called something like 'Desktop Dump' and drag everything into it in a single sweep.
  2. Triage that folder later: file the keepers into Documents or Downloads, trash the screenshots you'll never reopen.
  3. Redirect screenshot saving to a dedicated folder so they stop landing on the desktop (macOS Screenshot app options; Windows Screenshots folder).
  4. Empty the trash and leave only the wallpaper showing.

Tips

  • Resist re-saving to the desktop 'just for now': that is exactly how it started.
  • If you rely on a few shortcuts, keep them in one small folder rather than loose icons.

What counts as done

Your desktop shows only the wallpaper, or one tidy folder, with no loose files or stray screenshots.
