Curtain Call

20 pointschores & home

Take down your curtains, wash them, and hang them back up.

How to complete Curtain Call

Curtains quietly collect dust, pollen, cooking grease, and smoke that you stop noticing because the change is gradual. A full wash freshens the whole room's air and light, and it's a chore most people put off for years.

  1. Check the care label first - many panels are machine-washable cold, but some need dry cleaning
  2. Unhook them and remove all rings, hooks, or weights so nothing snags or rusts
  3. Shake or vacuum off loose dust outside before washing to avoid mud-like residue
  4. Wash on a gentle cold cycle with mild detergent, then hang or tumble low while still slightly damp
  5. Rehang them damp so the weight pulls out most wrinkles, and steam any that remain

Tips

  • Don't over-dry - high heat shrinks fabric and sets creases that won't hang out
  • Vacuum the rod, brackets, and window frame while the curtains are down
  • For sheers, washing in a mesh bag prevents tearing and tangling

What counts as done

The curtains are washed, dried, and rehung on their rod, clean and crease-free.
