The Fired Client
40 pointsCareer & Work
Voluntarily fire a client who is toxic, abusive, or pays too late, choosing your peace over the gold.
How to complete The Fired Client
Letting go of a client who drains you, disrespects your time, or chronically pays late is a deliberate trade: you surrender the revenue to reclaim energy, focus, and self-respect. Done cleanly it opens capacity for better work and proves your stated boundaries are real, not decorative.
- Check the money first: add up what this client contributes each month and confirm your runway or pipeline covers the gap.
- Close out obligations by finishing or formally handing off in-progress work and sending a final invoice for anything owed.
- Draft a short, neutral notice stating the end date and citing the contract's notice period, and skip the grievance list.
- Decide whether to offer a referral or a brief transition window, then hold that line without reopening the terms.
- Send it in writing, save a copy, and stop accepting new requests from them.
Tips
- Never walk mid-deliverable with no handoff plan; it hands them an excuse to withhold payment.
- Reread the termination clause before you hit send so notice and final pay are airtight.
- Stay civil even if they were not; assume your message gets forwarded or screenshotted.
What counts as done
A written termination notice has gone out and you have declined to take any further work from that client.
