The 'Weakness' Trap

15 pointscareer & work

Successfully answer 'What is your biggest weakness?' without saying 'I am a perfectionist'.

How to complete The 'Weakness' Trap

Interviewers ask about your weakness to see whether you have real self-awareness or just a rehearsed dodge. 'I'm a perfectionist' is the most worn-out non-answer there is, and clearing this means giving a genuine flaw plus what you're doing about it.

  1. Pick a real, non-fatal weakness that won't sink the specific job you're applying for.
  2. Describe it honestly in one sentence without dressing it up as a secret strength.
  3. Immediately pair it with the concrete action you're taking to manage or improve it.
  4. Add a brief example showing the fix actually working, so it doesn't sound theoretical.
  5. Stop talking once you've made the point; don't pile on more flaws.

Tips

  • Avoid the humblebrag classics: perfectionist, workaholic, 'I care too much'.
  • Don't name a weakness that's core to the role, like 'I'm bad with deadlines' for a project manager.
  • Practice it out loud once so the answer sounds natural, not memorized.

What counts as done

You deliver a real weakness plus a credible improvement story, and the word 'perfectionist' never leaves your mouth.
