The Trainer

30 pointscareer & work

Successfully train a new hire to do your job (or part of it) without getting annoyed by their questions.

How to complete The Trainer

Teaching a new hire to do your job, or a piece of it, is the moment your knowledge stops living only in your head. The real test isn't explaining once, it's staying patient through the repeat questions until they can work without you.

  1. Write down or screen-record the core workflow so they have something to refer back to
  2. Demonstrate the task once fully, then watch them do it and correct as they go
  3. Hand off real work in increasing chunks rather than dumping everything at once
  4. Set a standing time for questions so interruptions feel expected instead of annoying
  5. Check their output for a while, then step back as they prove they've got it

Tips

  • Answer the same question twice without sighing, repetition is how people actually learn a process
  • Encourage them to keep their own notes so the documentation improves and they ask you less over time
  • Resist doing it for them when they're slow, struggling through it is what makes it stick

What counts as done

You're done when the new hire completes the job's core tasks correctly without needing you to step in.
