A real promotion means a new title and more pay, not just extra responsibility quietly piled on. Earning one is usually about demonstrating you already operate at the next level before anyone makes it official. 1. Ask your manager directly what the next level requires and get the specific criteria in writing
2. Start doing the higher-level work visibly for a quarter or two so the promotion ratifies reality
3. Quantify your impact in numbers, revenue, time saved, or scope, and keep a brag document updated
4. Line up sponsors and peers who will vouch for you when promotion decisions are discussed in your absence
5. Time the conversation around review or budget cycles when titles and raises actually get approved

Tips

• Separate the title talk from the pay talk only if needed, but never accept the new title without the raise
• If your company has no path up, a competing offer or a lateral move elsewhere is often the faster promotion
• Get the comp increase in the offer letter, verbal promises about future raises rarely materialize
