The 'One-Upper' Gagged

Someone tells a story. You successfully resist the urge to tell a 'better' or 'bigger' story about yourself.

How to complete The 'One-Upper' Gagged

One-upping is a conversational reflex that yanks the spotlight off the speaker and onto you, usually before you even notice you're doing it. Catching and swallowing that impulse once is small but real proof you can let someone else have their moment.

  1. Notice the trigger: the urge fires the instant their story touches something you've also done or topped.
  2. Bite down on your first reply: the bigger comeback almost always wants out within two seconds.
  3. Ask a follow-up about their story instead ('how did that feel?', 'what happened next?').
  4. Let their moment fully land before you say anything about yourself.

Tips

  • If you must relate, share briefly and hand the spotlight back rather than escalating.
  • Watch the sneaky version: 'oh that's nothing, when I...' is the same move in disguise.

What counts as done

You sat on a ready-made bigger story and kept the conversation centered on the other person.
