The Offer Letter

35 pointscareer & work

Receive an official, written offer of employment.

How to complete The Offer Letter

This is the moment a hiring process converts into something real and in writing: title, salary, start date, on paper. A verbal 'we'd love to have you' doesn't count; the written document is what protects you and what you can negotiate against.

  1. Get through the interview rounds, then make your continued interest clear to the recruiter so you stay top of mind
  2. When they signal intent, ask for the full terms in writing before committing to anything
  3. Read every line: base pay, bonus, equity, start date, title, and any contingencies like background checks
  4. Negotiate at least one term, even a small one, since the first number is rarely the ceiling
  5. Confirm your acceptance in writing once you're satisfied

Tips

  • Never resign your current job on a verbal offer alone
  • If equity is involved, ask for the number of shares and the total outstanding, not just a percentage
  • A short, polite counter rarely loses the offer and often gains a few thousand
