The Notice Period

40 pointscareer & work

Submit your official resignation notice to a job, work out your required final days professionally, and leave on good terms.

How to complete The Notice Period

Leaving a job cleanly is its own skill: you resign formally, finish your obligations, and exit without burning the relationship. The payoff is references, a reputation, and a network that outlast this one role.

  1. Sign your next offer before you resign; never quit on a verbal promise
  2. Tell your direct manager first, in person or on a call, before any written notice or gossip
  3. Hand over a short, dated resignation letter stating your last working day
  4. Spend the notice documenting your work, wrapping up tasks, and training whoever takes over
  5. Stay productive and discreet to the end; resist the urge to coast or vent

Tips

  • Honor the full notice in your contract, usually two weeks or as required, unless released early
  • Keep exit-interview feedback honest but unemotional, not a list of grievances
  • Decline counteroffers gracefully if you've already decided to go

What counts as done

You served out your stated notice period and left with the door open to return or get a reference.
