The Internal Transfer

Successfully apply for and secure a different position within your same company.

How to complete The Internal Transfer

This is moving into a different role inside your current employer, switching teams, functions, or departments without leaving the company. It's often the fastest way to change direction, since you keep your tenure, benefits, and internal reputation while resetting your day-to-day work.

  1. Check the internal job board and learn your company's transfer policy, including any minimum time-in-role rule.
  2. Quietly build a relationship with the hiring manager of the team you want before a role even opens.
  3. Get your current manager's buy-in early, or at least time the conversation so they don't feel blindsided.
  4. Tailor your internal application to show transferable wins and why you're moving toward the new role, not just away from the old.
  5. Interview as seriously as an outside candidate and then negotiate the title and pay of the new position.

Tips

  • Many companies require you to inform your current manager; find out the norm before you apply.
  • Lateral moves into a hotter team often beat waiting years for a vertical promotion.
  • Line up internal references from people the hiring manager trusts.
