Self-Employed

95 pointscareer & work

Make the leap to full-time self-employment. You are now the CEO, HR, and Janitor.

How to complete Self-Employed

Going full-time self-employed means your income now depends entirely on what you build and sell, with no salary, no boss, and no one else covering the slow months. The payoff is full control; the cost is wearing every hat at once, from selling to bookkeeping to taking out the trash.

  1. Build a runway of 6-12 months of expenses before quitting, or grow the side income to match your salary first
  2. Register properly (sole proprietorship, LLC, or local equivalent) and open a separate business bank account
  3. Land your first paying clients or sales while still employed so day one isn't from zero
  4. Set up invoicing, expense tracking, and tax set-asides before you need them
  5. Block your week into selling, doing the work, and admin so no single part swallows the others

Tips

  • Set aside taxes from every payment, the bill is brutal if you don't
  • Charge more than feels comfortable; you're now covering benefits, downtime, and overhead
  • Protect a hard stop each day or self-employment quietly becomes a 24/7 job

What counts as done

Your full-time income comes from your own business and you've left or never returned to traditional employment.
