Scope Creep Denied

45 pointscareer & work

Tell a client that their new request is out of scope and requires an additional contract or fee.

How to complete Scope Creep Denied

When a client asks for work beyond what you agreed to, naming it as out of scope and attaching a fee or change order stops the slow erosion of unpaid extras. It also resets the relationship around clear terms instead of an endless drip of one more small thing.

  1. Know your original scope cold by rereading the contract or proposal so you can point to exactly what was agreed.
  2. Acknowledge the request warmly, then state plainly that it falls outside the current scope.
  3. Quote it as a discrete add-on, such as a change order, extra hours, or a new line item with a price.
  4. Let them decide to approve, defer, or drop it, and do not start until they confirm.
  5. Capture the agreed change in writing before you do any of the new work.

Tips

  • Frame it as being glad to help and explaining what it would take, rather than as a refusal.
  • Track scope from day one so creep is obvious the moment it begins.
  • A clearly written scope in the original contract keeps these conversations short.

What counts as done

You told the client the request was out of scope and either got paid extra for it or had them formally agree to the change.
