How to complete Master Craftsman
This is the top recognized rung of a hands-on trade, where you are certified to do the most demanding work and to train others. Getting there means logged hours, passed examinations, and proof you can execute at a standard apprentices cannot. It is the difference between doing the job and defining how it should be done.
- Identify your trade's actual top credential, master electrician, master plumber, journeyman-to-master, ASE Master, or your field's equivalent
- Complete the required apprenticeship and supervised hours, which often run several thousand documented on the job
- Pass the master-level written and practical exams, studying the current code or specification cold
- Build a portfolio of complex, finished work that demonstrates range beyond the test scenarios
- Maintain the certification through continuing education and renewals so it stays valid
