Giving Feedback
20 pointscareer & work
Give a coworker or direct report honest, helpful feedback without destroying their confidence.
How to complete Giving Feedback
Useful feedback changes behavior; clumsy feedback gets ignored or wounds. The skill is delivering a specific observation the person can act on while keeping them motivated rather than defensive.
- Pick a private moment soon after the event, not weeks later in a group setting.
- Name the specific behavior and its impact, not a character label (the missed deadline the client noticed, not 'you're unreliable').
- Pause and ask for their side before you prescribe a fix.
- Agree together on one concrete next step.
Tips
- Skip the compliment sandwich; people remember the bread and miss the point.
- Use 'I noticed' framing to stay observational instead of accusatory.
- Balance praise and criticism across the whole relationship, not inside one talk.
What counts as done
The person leaves knowing exactly what to change and willing to do it, not deflated or arguing.
