Boundary Setter
45 pointscareer & work
Politely tell a boss or client that a deadline is unreasonable and negotiate a realistic timeline.
How to complete Boundary Setter
Pushing back on an impossible deadline is a career skill most people avoid until burnout forces it. Done well, it isn't confrontation. It's giving the person who set the deadline accurate information before they build plans on a date that was never real. People who do this calmly get more trust, not less.
- Work out an honest estimate first, including buffer for review and surprises, so you're negotiating from numbers rather than feelings.
- Prepare at least two alternatives before the conversation: a later date, a reduced scope for the original date, or added help.
- Raise it as early as possible: pushback on day one reads as planning; pushback the night before reads as failure.
- Frame it around the work: name what the deadline puts at risk, then present your options and ask which trade-off they prefer.
- Confirm whatever you agree in a short follow-up email so the new timeline exists in writing.
Tips
- Never say only 'that's impossible': a no without options sounds like refusal, a no with options sounds like competence.
- Expect some pushback in return; hold your estimate calmly instead of caving at the first frown.
- If they insist on the original date, get the scope cut or the risk acknowledged in writing; that's still a successful boundary.
What counts as done
You told a boss or client directly that a deadline wasn't realistic, proposed alternatives, and ended with a revised timeline or scope agreed and documented.
