The Application Marathon

60 pointscareer & work

Submit a milestone of 50 job applications. The search is a full-time challenge.

How to complete The Application Marathon

Fifty applications is where a job search stops being a reaction to bad days at work and becomes an actual campaign. Volume matters because hiring is a numbers game with brutal response rates, but the real value of the milestone is the system you're forced to build to get there.

  1. Set up a tracker with columns for company, role, date applied, resume version, and status; memory fails around application ten.
  2. Build two or three resume variants targeted at your main role types instead of tailoring from scratch every time.
  3. Commit to a daily or weekly quota, such as five per weekday, and treat it like a work deliverable.
  4. Split your targets into tiers: high-effort custom applications for dream roles, fast tailored ones for solid fits.
  5. Review your response rate every ten applications and change your resume or targeting if nothing is landing.
  6. Follow up once after a week of silence on roles you actually want.

Tips

  • Applying to the same company twice for near-identical roles counts once: fifty means fifty distinct applications.
  • Easy-apply buttons inflate your count but rarely convert; balance them with applications through company sites and referrals.
  • Batch similar roles in one sitting to reuse cover letter material without copy-paste errors.
